Founded in 2018 by artist and designer Michelle von Mandel, Smelly Projects began with a series of art candles designed and handcrafted by Michelle, inspired by places she lived and travelled. 

 

Always curious and exploring new mediums of creative expression, Michelle studied Fashion at Parsons and The Art Institute of Chicago, Fine Arts and Acting at NYU, and had a career as a DJ in New York before moving to London to pursue her MA in olfactory art. Now, a decade later, her career and creative practice have come full circle back to fashion, having collected an arsenal of tools and experiences along the way that contribute to a unique perspective on design and insight into the intersection between various creative mediums.

At Smelly Projects, we believe that what you wear has the ability to make you happy without making the planet sad. We invest in sustainable and ethical practices, sourcing our materials responsibly and ensuring that every piece is crafted with care. By choosing to release limited edition collections using a pre-order sales model, we ensure every piece we create is going to a loving home and in doing so greatly reduce our impact on the environment by eliminating the waste of unsold garments.

Each of our limited edition collections focuses on a specific theme - often witty, cheeky, and whimsical; always bright, colourful, and cheerful. From the hand-drawn prints, to the hand-beaded jewellery, each piece is unique, hand-made, adds a touch of art to everyday life.
